Situated on the bank of the river Buriganga near Wiseghat,
this stately monument was originally built in 1872 by Nawab Abdul Ghani, as
a palace on the site of an old French Factory and it was named after his son
Nawab Ahsanullah Bahadur. It was heavily damaged by the devastating tornado
of 1888 but was later reconstructed completely with substantial alterations
to its original appearance. This two storeyed grand palace with a broad
picturesque river front stands on a high podium, of which the central part
is crowned by a lofty dome. An imposing flight of steps from the river-side
leads directly to the prominently projecting ground triple-arched portal of
the second storey. Today's renovated Ahsan Manzil turned into a museum is a
monument of immense historical value. Ahsan Manzil is just a short drive
from downtown Dhaka |
